Nothing can beat the power that a crisis has to bring out the best in us. It’s a moment that separates the givers from the takers and truly shows you who is in your corner.
When I was a kid, my mother was facing bankruptcy due to her terminal cancer. Times were tough, and she didn’t know what to do next. One day I was sitting in the living room of our apartment playing video games while she was looking over the bills.
We got a knock at the door, I answered the door and standing there was my elementary school principal. My first thoughts were, “Oh crap. It wasn’t me! I didn’t see anything; I didn’t do anything. I know nothing.” But luckily my principal and a few other ladies from our church community were here to see my mother.
They handed her an envelope, and my mother broke down crying. I learned later it was a check from the community that helped her to pay off her debt and stabilize our families finances. At that moment, the tribe rallied around my family to protect us and I will never forget that moment.
A moment to rally around Houston
As we see in Houston, this terrible disaster has claimed numerous lives but has also brought out the best of humanity: A mattress man steps up to help his community, a football star raises $13 million and ounting for Houston, and neighboring country lends aid.
These are beautiful moments that unite us to build a better society instead of focusing on petty differences that drive wedges behind us. During every crisis the self-created labels we used to fracture our society melt away, and we remember that we all live in one united tribe called humanity.
